There is a particular magic required for a family staycation, and any parent will recognise the equation instantly. The children want adrenaline. You want stillness. Usually, someone loses. What we didn’t expect, pulling up to Yas Plaza Mangroves by IHG on a golden Friday afternoon, was to find a hotel that had quietly solved it.
Tucked along the edge of Yas Island’s protected mangroves – mere minutes from the roar of Ferrari World and yet somehow a world away from it – Yas Plaza Mangroves moves at its own pace. The hotel calls it “nature-inspired stays surrounded by mangroves and a slower rhythm”, and for once, the tagline undersells it. This is Yas Island exhaled: soft greens, water views, and the kind of hush that makes you drop your shoulders in the lobby before you’ve even checked in.

First Impressions: where the mangroves meet the suite life
We were booked into a One Bedroom Suite with Sea View Balcony, and it set the tone for the entire weekend. Suites here are generous in the way families actually need – a proper bedroom, a living space where the children could sprawl with their books and devices, and a balcony that became our private ritual. Every morning as we rose, the light shifted across the water, herons drifting over the mangroves below, as Abu Dhabi woke up slowly around us.
It’s worth saying plainly: for families, the suite format is transformative. Nobody tiptoeing around a sleeping toddler at 8pm. Nobody negotiating over one bathroom. Just space – and on a two-night weekend escape, space is the ultimate luxury.
Check-in was warm and unhurried (from 3pm, with early arrival subject to availability), and the team’s genuine ease with children was evident from the first hello. This is a hotel that expects families, rather than merely tolerating them.

The Theme Park Factor: the USP that changes everything
Here is where Yas Plaza Mangroves plays its trump card. Every night of your stay includes daily access to one of Yas Island’s theme parks – with a choice of Ferrari World Yas Island, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi or SeaWorld Yas Island, and up to four tickets per bedroom per day.
Anyone who has priced up park tickets for a family of four knows exactly what this means. What would normally be the single biggest line on the holiday budget simply… disappears into the room rate. We spent our first day in the air-conditioned wonderland of Warner Bros. World – the eldest hasn’t stopped talking about Gotham City – while the youngest is already demanding a return to cool off down the slides of Yas Waterworld. Two parks, one weekend, zero ticket queues, and the hotel’s location means you’re back in the suite, showered and horizontal by the pool within half an hour of leaving the gates.

The Dining Edit: Five venues, zero decision fatigue
Dining at Yas Plaza Mangroves follows the same unhurried philosophy as everything else – “flavours at a gentler pace”, as the hotel puts it – and with an all-inclusive meal plan, we ate our way through the line-up with enthusiasm.
Assymetri anchored our mornings: an all-day dining restaurant with an expansive international buffet and à la carte menu that manages the rare feat of pleasing a discerning adult palate and an eight-year-old’s simultaneously.
Filini Garden was the grown-up highlight – and, we’d argue, one of the best sunset spots in Abu Dhabi. This open-air Italian lounge looks out across the golfing greens all the way to the creek, and as the sky turned apricot on our first evening, plates of silky handmade pasta arriving as the light faded, we had one of those rare parental out-of-body moments: we are actually relaxing.

Belgian Café brought the buzz – a vintage 1920s-inspired brasserie serving authentic Belgian comfort food, with live sport on the screens and a convivial, after-work energy that made it the natural spot for a lazy long lunch.
The beauty of the proximity of all the Yas Plaza hotels is that a short stroll next door unlocks further culinary delights. Case in point: Stills Restaurant & Bar, at sister property Crowne Plaza Yas Island – this is the one to bookmark for a grown-up evening out. Home to the longest bar in the capital – a fact that feels genuinely cinematic when you see it stretch out before you – it serves hearty, signature European plates alongside an extensive line-up of international draught beers and spirits, all with a lively, laid-back energy. Crowned Abu Dhabi’s Favourite Ladies’ Night by What’s On Abu Dhabi in 2023, it’s proof that a staycation within the Yas Plaza Hotels collection extends well beyond your own lobby; once the children were happily settled, it made for the perfect conspiratorial nightcap.
The Verdict
For UAE families weighing up a summer escape, this is the rare staycation where nobody compromises. The suites give you space, the included theme park tickets give you serious value, the dining gives you range, and the mangroves give you something increasingly precious on Yas Island: calm. We arrived as four slightly frazzled people and left, two days later, as a family who had genuinely spent time together. That’s the review, really.
