When you first arrive in Dubai, whether as an expat or holidaymaker, the first thing people tell you is: “You have to do a brunch.” It’s true, you do, but this all-encompassing word ‘brunch’ doesn’t mean that there’s a standard formula. From the chandeliers, white paneling and marble floors to the caviar, cheese board and seafood grill, there is nothing standard about Imperium. Located in Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, it attracts a mixed crowd. There are those dressed up for special occasions (for which Imperium offers an ideal setting), and others who have aired on the more casual side of the ‘smart/casual’ dress code.
DÉCOR
The design of the grand banqueting hall is impressive and gives the large space a regal atmosphere. Glitzy chandeliers and gold cornicing ensure that anybody with magpie tendencies is taken aback.
This is the kind of setting that you can imagine a 1920s soiree taking place. Ball gowns and Louboutins would feel very comfortable gliding across the marble floors.
Yet somehow the atmosphere is casual, and while this is fantastic for special occasions and leisurely afternoons with friends, it lacks the revelry needed for big celebrations. That said, if chilled our finery is what you’re looking for, Imperium has it covered.
FOOD
With an onus on French classics, brasserie style bites are plentiful. A huge array of cheese, bread, salad, seafood and terrines adorn the tables.
It’s important not to over indulge on the buffet stations though, as the grill and a la carte mains are equally divine – our plates were never without a grilled prawn or slice of beef.
Pacing yourself in this place is difficult, so the prospect of dessert is frightening. However, when the dessert selection is this good, there’s always room for more. Pastries, cakes, ice cream, and chocolate puddings are on offer – we recommend giving this section of the buffet some attention. It deserves it.
