The Adidas X Ravi restaurant collaboration officially launched earlier this week and residents across the UAE have been trying to get their hands on their own pair of the limited-edition sneakers, priced at Dhs549.
Hoards of people were seen queueing outside Adidas’ Dubai Mall flagship store on the launch day hoping to snag their own pair of SUPERSTAR RAVIs.
Given the popularity of the collaboration, it’s unsurprising that many in Dubai are trying to resell their pairs for a marked-up price. However, some are aiming to sell on for an astronomical price, with one pair on sale for Dhs44,000 on Facebook Marketplace.
On the Facebook seller’s advert they state, “New. Legendary. 44 years = AED44,000. Fight me if you want, But you can’t fight math.” The 44 years represents how long the beloved Dubai restaurant has been in business, first opening its doors in 1978.
Meanwhile, other pairs are selling for a more modest Dhs900 to Dhs2,750 range.
The collaboration is a part of the global activewear brand’s new ‘adilicious’ series where the label has teamed up with restaurants around the globe to tell stories through the art of food.
As part of the 11 restaurants in 11 cities, adidas collaborated with Ravi, located in Satwa, Dubai.
The collaboration sees a re-interpreted version of the adidas Original Superstar known as the SUPERSTAR RAVI which contains a whole host of references to the history and heritage of the Dubai homegrown restaurant.
The heel of the sneaker features the year Ravi opened alongside the name in English and Arabic on either shoe; the sock liner includes a hand-drawn map design signifying the meaning of the name Ravi, meaning “river” which is in Northeastern Pakistan; and the colourway of the sneaker references the Pakistani heritage of the owners. Six hero dishes from the restaurant, selected by the owners, have also added to the tongue of the sneaker in both English and Arabic on either shoe.
Given the sneakers have been so popular, would you pay Dhs44,000 for a pair?
