Contemporary tribute to the UAE
Founder of homegrown brand MKS Jewellery, HRH Sheikha Mariam bint Khalifa bin Saif Al Nahyan, has unveiled her newest collection at the Abu Dhabi Art Fair.
‘Al Otaiba’ collection (that translates to The King of Pearls) is split into five capsules that pay tribute to the UAE heritage in a contemporary way. The designer chose to work Emirati pearls, as well as the classic mother of pearl, to create delicate yet impactful pieces.
“Emirati pearl and mother of pearls are so precious to us, they speak of the colours of our sea and the colour of the earth, where our ancestors are buried, and where we find roots to grow. How beautiful the colour of our home, how unique is its glow,” explains Sheikha Mariam.
Comprised of necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings, the five storylines are: Lulu Cubes, Lulu Hearts, Promise Knots, Sea Signs and the Poet.
Sea Signs was inspired by a compass that pearl divers used when they were out at sea and feature diamond stars which Sheikha Mariam hopes will remind the wearer to always follow her dreams. The Poet pieces present beautifully detailed gold scroll capsules which house parchment scrolls of calligraphed poetry from Sheikh Zayed and Mana Al Otaiba.
Promise Knots is a minimalist tribute to the rope that pearl divers used and incorporate an ultra-simplified hand twisted rope detail throughout. Lulu Hearts are classic pieces created to make the statement about passing a token of love and sentiment. Lulu Cubes use a combination of pearls and hand cut red carnelian – a historical reference to this part of the world.
