The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their second child, a baby girl, at the beginning of June.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their daughter after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Diana, giving her the moniker Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Now, seven weeks after her birth, Lilibet has officially been added to the royal line of succession on the British Royal Family website – she is eighth in line to the throne.

At present, the line of succession is as follows: Charles, the Prince of Wales; William, the Duke of Cambridge; Prince George of Cambridge; Princess Charlotte of Cambridge; Prince Louis of Cambridge; Harry, the Duke of Sussex; Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor; Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor; and so on.

Some royal reporters and experts have questioned exactly why it took so long to update the official royal website.

“You have got to ask what has taken them so long,” ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship said on the Royal Rata podcast. “All they have got to do is hit the paragraph button and put in a different number. They must have done it before. They did it for Archie.”

According to reports, the royal website was updated for Lilibet’s elder brother, two-year-old Archie Mountbatten Windsor within two weeks of his birth in May 2019.

The Sussexes stepped down from their public royal duties at the beginning of 2019, eventually relocating to Montecito, California in the USA.

Since then, relations between the couple and the rest of the royal family have been somewhat strained.

Prior to the birth of Lilibet, the Duke and Duchess sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey where the pair laid bare their issues with ‘The Firm’ which included accusations of “falsehoods” being perpetuated about them; allegations of racism; severe mental health issues and more.

One of the most bombshell revelations in the interview was when Meghan alleged there were conversations between Harry and other family members about how “dark” baby Archie’s skin would be when he’s born.
