Flower power

Running a successful and luxurious flower business in Dubai is not as easy as it seems. Finding the right suppliers, keeping it seasonal while also creating jaw-dropping creations – some in a very short time frame – requires experience and great leadership.

Natasha Golubeva has been the managing director of one of the most popular florists in Dubai, Maisons Des Fleurs, since 2015. She’s grown the business internationally, while also developing it’s sustainability efforts. In 2018 they implemented “Flowers For The Future” policy that includes buying fair trade and seasonal fresh flowers, expanding faux selection and recycling cardboard, paper and glass while also investigating into options to recycle green waste.

What did you study at university?

Originally I studied International Relations. However, when I chose to continue my education, I decided to go into Hotel & Restaurant Management with a special focus on Events Management.

What was your first job?

My first job was being a function waitress at an event venue. Since then, whenever I see something wrong laid out in a table setting, I have a sudden urge to fix it.

Where did your passion for flowers come from?

Since I can remember, I had a very definitive passion for flowers and flower arrangement. I have always been very specific with flowers I give and I pay a massive amount of attention to any flower installation in any event that I have ever been fortunate enough to organise.

What are the key elements of your role?

First and foremost, is the strategic development of the company. We must know where we want to be and how we’re planning to get there. Secondly, but definitely not In importance, it’s to make sure the company is surrounded with incredibly amazing people that can share your vision and help improve it.

Talk us through your daily routine.

I don’t really have a specific one. I run a couple of companies, that are located in different countries and, therefore, the daily routine would differ based on the country that I am in. In the UAE, a key part of my routine is visiting the shops and talking to most members of our team. These talks can range from any event prep to upcoming collections, to HR or even daily points. I like to be informed about pretty much everything that goes on in the company.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?

The main advice would have to be – no matter how challenging something looks, you have to at least try and do it. Believe in yourself and in your team – that is half of the battle. And last, but definitely not least, don’t be afraid to fail, as long as you get up and try again.

Which fashion brands can we find in your work wardrobe?

My style is very diverse. I have everything from H&M and Zara to Zimmerman, Brunello Cucinelli and everything in between.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

My parents once told me that I can do whatever I want, as long as I put my mind to it and don’t stop until I work my backside off  to get it. Meaning – determination, perseverance and knowledge are the key to succeeding. Basically, I was taught to believe in myself and work hard.

And what is the worst?

“Oh, you won’t be able to pull this off – you’re just a girl”.

What has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome?

Balancing the work/personal life scale. It almost always tips very heavily towards work.
