Models Gigi Hadid and Halima Aden have joined a global outcry for justice following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota while in police custody.

In footage that went viral, former policeman Derek Chauvin is seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes, preventing him from breathing. He has since been charged with his murder and will appear in court on Monday.

Thousands of people, including celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Chrissy Teigen, Rihanna and Beyoncé, have taken to social media to express their anger at the unjust death of Floyd who was arrested for reportedly trying to pay with a counterfeit $20 note at a local grocery store.

Hadid posted a quote from actor Will Smith, writing: “Enraged. Sickened. Heartbroken. But never surprised. This happens way too often – and the videos that go viral are not isolated events.

“It seems that only when caught on camera are bigots & MURDERERS even getting ‘investigated’ or fired .. unfortunately, the only way things will start changing is if all these racist, ignorant, monsters (badge &/or not) have to face the consequences- behind bars.”

She encouraged everyone to “keep signing petitions, making calls to demand justice, speaking out” whether or not you have a big platform or not. The mother-to-be also added, this is all to fight “to make a difference for every life that has been wrongly taken or effected by THE PANDEMIC OF RACISM”.

Aden was equally as passionate in her post: “I’m at a loss for words.. I’m disgusted and disappointed. The mistreatment of African Americans in this country needs to be addressed. Enough is enough!!”

She was was the first hijabi model to compete in the Miss Minnesota contest and has encouraged her followers to keep demanding justice.

“Dear black boys, you have every right to a long, beautiful life and I pray we can keep you safe,” she adds.

The death of Floyd has led to demonstrations and riots taking place all over major cities in the USA, with some curfews being put in place in order to prevent further violent clashes.

According to the BBC, Hennepin County Prosecutor Mike Freeman said he “anticipates charges” for the other officers.
