His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has paid tribute to the first Emirati doctor upon his passing.

A pioneer in the medical space, Dr Ahmed Kazim, passed away after forging a successful career as a surgeon over five decades.

In a post on Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed shared a photo of himself with Dr Kazim, paying tribute to the late surgeon, praising his service to the people of the UAE.

“Our condolences to the family of Dr. Ahmed Kazim, the first Emirati doctor in the country,” the Dubai Ruler said. “Five decades of his life he spent in serving people, treating them and curing their pain. He has all our praise and appreciation.”

Dr. Kazim began his career in the medical field after graduating from Bombay University. He then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, to obtain his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) certification in 1958 and then again in England in 1960.

Dr. Kazim went on to forge an impressive career for himself as an orthopaedic surgeon, working at the likes of Rashid Hospital and then Dubai Hospital where he headed up the orthopaedic department. He then retired in 2004.
