Apple’s yearly release of a new iPhone has finally arrived – say hello to the iPhone 12.
Last night, on October 13 at 9pm UAE time, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro, along with some other very exciting announcements.
To give you a breakdown we’ve rounded up 12 things you need to know about the new iPhone 12 and the other latest Apple launches.
How many new iPhones are there?
There’s not one new iPhone, not two, but four new iPhones available as part of the latest launch.
What are the models?
There’s the iPhone 12 Pro – which comes in the normal 6.1-inch size and the Max size which is 6.7 inches, both with Super Retina XDR display.
Apple also unveiled the iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 12 mini with a 5.4-inch display.
What are the specs?
The new iPhone releases feature edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience, and a new Ceramic Shield front cover, providing the biggest jump in durability ever on Apple devices.
All of the models feature the “fastest chip in any smartphone”, the A14 Bionic, 5G capability and MagSafe, which offers high-powered wireless charging.
What are the cameras like?
As for the cameras, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have the advanced dual-camera system. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max feature LiDAR scanners which are meant to measure light distance and also shoot HDR video with Dolby Vision – the “highest quality video in a smartphone”.

What are the colours?
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be available in five aluminium finishes in blue, green, black, white and red.
The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max are made from stainless steel and the colourways include graphite, silver, gold and pacific blue.
How much are the new iPhones in the UAE?
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini are available in 65GB, 128GB and 256GB. iPhone 12 prices begin at Dhs3,399 and iPhone 12 Mini prices begin at Dhs2,999.
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. iPhone 12 Pro prices begin at Dhs4,199 and iPhone 12 Pro Max prices begin at Dhs4,699.
When will the new iPhones be available in the UAE?
In the UAE, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro will be available to pre-order from October 16.
Meanwhile the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order from November 6.
Can I trade my iPhone in for an upgrade?
Yes, you can.
How much will I get for my old iPhone?
The amount you get for a trade-in is dependent on how old your previous iPhone is and also the condition of the iPhone.
What is MagSafe?
MagSafe is a new innovative way to charge your phone developed by Apple. It’s set to offer “a unique experience to iPhone, featuring an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil, optimised for alignment and efficiency, that perfectly connects to iPhone every time”.
Is there a new iOS release?
Yes. Along with the new iPhone release comes iOS 14. This new update will give Apple users the opportunity to customise their home screen with different widgets.
What was said about the new iPhone
During the unveiling of the new iPhone models Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, discussed the “new era” Apple was stepping into.
“The arrival of 5G marks the beginning of a new era for iPhone and we’re thrilled to bring these impressive new capabilities to our customers with iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini,” he said. “We’re once again pushing the boundaries to deliver incredible computational photography advancements, Super Retina XDR displays, and the biggest leap in durability in iPhone history with the new Ceramic Shield front cover.”
