Modern heritage

During these uncertain times, we continue to show support for emerging brands in the region. The next name that came across our radar is ethical jewellery label Moors & Saints.

Based in Dubai, the brand celebrates the heritage and beauty of Moorish architecture through it’s ethical approach to craftsmanship. Set up in 2019 bu Chama Mechtaly, all of the pieces are handmade in Dubai using 18 carat gold, sterling silver along with precious and semi-precious stones. Keeping in line with their mission to be 100 per cent conflict-free, Moors & Saints does not use diamonds in it’s jewellery.

“We want to bring cultures and communities together through jewellery and highlight our similarities rather than our differences and we want to do it while respecting our customers’ moral fabric and empowering the next generations of women,” the brand states.

At the moment, there are three collections on offer. The Granada line is inspired by Alhambra palace featuring it’s distinct octagonal stars across earrings, rings and a cuff. Earrings feature a poetic mantra in Arabic that reads: ‘There is no victor but Allah, which served to remind the Nasrid dynasty that modesty and humility are the most important qualities even when basking in success.”

Alazhar mosque, which was built by the Fatimids more than one thousand years ago, inspired The Cairo collections. Adorned by an 18kt gold star at the centre of the design, the pieces are a tribute to the diversity that shaped the city.

Fans of pearls will love the Marrakesh collection Inspired by the glazed cosmic zellij tiles of the Saadian Tombs, the burial site of the Saadi dynasty. This collection takes an emblematic geometric design familiar to every Moroccan artisan and paints it in the millennial pink colours.
