Sahar Al Rasti has etched her name into maritime history as the first Emirati woman to captain a ship for Abu Dhabi Maritime Services Company. Her journey, marked by dedication and perseverance, has shattered gender stereotypes and paved the way for future generations of Emirati women in the maritime industry.

On the occasion of Emirati Women’s Day 2024, we invited four inspiring women, pioneers in their fields of expertise to share their remarkable journeys.

Al Rasti’s passion for the sea ignited in 2015 when she began working as an administrative assistant in Abu Dhabi’s ports. Her curiosity and drive led her to transition into the role of shipping services coordinator, becoming the first Emirati woman to hold this position. Determined to further her maritime career, she successfully completed the qualification program for captains of ships under 24 meters, accumulating over 1300 sailing hours within six months.

“Dream big, alway believe in your passion and don’t be afraid to fail.”  This is the cornerstone of Al Rasti’s advice for young Emirati women, especially with the infrastructure and opportunities that come with being a citizen of this great nation.

Her achievements extend beyond her captaincy. Al Rasti is also the first Emirati woman to pass the International Law Course on Maritime Aid and Maneuvers Levels I and II in the Middle East. This accomplishment underscores her commitment to professional development and her deep understanding of maritime regulations.

Al Rasti envisions establishing a factory for ship maintenance, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit and desire to contribute to the industry’s growth. Additionally, she aims to provide training opportunities for UAE nationals, fostering a new generation of skilled maritime professionals.

“The maritime field is brimming with opportunities and it is the perfect time to make a career in this profession,” shared Al Rasti when asked about sharing her wisdom those wanting to be a part of this challenging yet exciting industry.

Al Rasti’s journey has been marked by challenges, including long hours, demanding conditions, and initial opposition from her family. However, her unwavering belief in herself and her father’s unwavering support have propelled her forward. She encourages other women to consider a career in the maritime industry, emphasizing that while it may be challenging, the rewards are immense for those who are passionate about the sea.
