As we approach the halfway point of Ramadan, it means Eid Al Fitr is just around the corner.
While the dates are dependent upon the sighting of the moon, the UAE’s Emirates Astronomical Society has issued the expected date of when Eid Al Fitr will fall, which will mean a few days off for many across the country.
Apart from New Year’s Day, this will mark the first public holiday of the year in the UAE.
What is Eid Al Fitr?
In the Islamic Calendar, Eid Al Fitr marks the official end of Ramadan and is the first day of Shawwal. During the Holy Month Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset for around 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon. Eid Al Fitr marks the end of fasting, and literally translates in English to the “feast of breaking the fast”.
When is Eid Al Fitr in 2022?
On Tuesday, the Emirates Astronomical Society announced when the first day of Shawwal is predicted to fall.
The society’s Board Chairman, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, said it’s likely for Eid Al Fitr to fall on Monday, May 2, 2022.
In line with the Islamic Calendar, the last day of Eid Al Fitr is Shawwal 3, which will be May 4 in the Gregorian calendar.
This means in the UAE, we could have three days off for the public holiday, meaning a five-day weekend in total, returning to work on Thursday, May 5, 2022.
However, official holiday dates are set to be confirmed by UAE authorities, but it’s always good to start planning what to do in advance!
