As part of further measures to combat the spread of coronavirus, Dubai Police have been testing out new detection technology.

In a new video posted to the Instagram account of Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Head of Police and General Security in Dubai, an officer is seen trialling a smart helmet complete with an infra-red camera.

The camera, through the use of thermal imaging, is seemingly able to detect the body temperatures of different individuals, as showcased at a crowded bus station in the video.

According to the Lieutenant General’s post, the use of the helmets is the first of this kind of technology in this region.

“Smart helmets scan the temperature of public transport users and measure the audience temperature with high efficiency, in addition to the presence of artificial intelligence technologies such as face recognition technology and car number reading technology,” Brigadier General Obaid Al Hathboor, Director of Transportation Security Department, Dubai Police, said.

“This step comes in fulfillment of the administration’s strategy to secure the transportation security sector in accordance with the best international standards and practices to counter the spread of coronavirus.”

Currently in Dubai, the national sterilisation programme is underway for 24 hours a day, meaning all residents are required to stay home. The only permissible reasons to leave home include shopping for groceries, medicines or medical appointments, all of which a movement permit is required.
