The SS19 collection should brighten up this gloomy weather.
Dubai-based fashion label All Things Mochi is continuing to grow it’s presence in the region and beyond – even HM Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan is a firm fan.
Founder Ayah Tabari travels around the globe in search of local artisans to create unmistakably colourful and ethical pieces, and for SS19 she chose Polynesia as her inspiration.
Now stocked at American Rag, it has become even easier to get your hands on the latest creations – and who doesn’t want a trending tie-dye print to cheer up what might be a very rainy weekend in Dubai?
Tabari talks us through the collection and what we can expect in the future, including the development of non-plastic and environmentally friendly materials.
Why did you choose Polynesia as a theme for the SS19 collection?
We were inspired by the Polynesian culture. The Polynesian culture is all about dance, music, art and the wonders of every day island life, especially Tahiti. The beautiful people, landscapes and essence captured my heart straight away.
What new elements of design can we expect?
We introduced tie-dye into the collection, its super bright and colourful which of course is what our Mochi girl is looking for and shows the unique Tahitian technique of handmade art.
Tell us about the local artisans that worked on this collection.
Polynesians are very traditional. They embrace their beliefs and have a strong family ethic. The embroidery in this collection was inspired by Tatau, which represents the story of the Polynesians life and journeys they have faced.
The brand has really evolved and is now stocked at American Rag, why did you choose them?
We love American Rag! The store is fresh and innovative. The team has really got the perfect mix of culture and design accompanied by unique pieces, we think Mochi is the perfect fit for the more Boho, chilled girl with a Californian vibe who loves to feel great in what she wears.
What does ethical fashion mean to you?
Ethical Fashion for me is giving back to communities by creating jobs and opportunities for work to contribute to their well-being and growth. We will also be introducing non-plastic and environmentally friendly materials into production as well as sourcing new fabrications using natural raw materials.
How do you see the brand expanding in the next few years?
We are expanding year on year and the growth is really exciting to see, the team are continuously researching new markets to enter.
Which other parts of the world would you love to explore?
I want to see the world, but some favourites are; Peru, Philippines, New parts of India, China and Korea. The list is endless!
What can we always find in your suitcase?
All Things Mochi pieces of course, Vintage denim everything, a basic t-shirt and colourful accessories from my travels all over the world.
What challenges do you face with running your own business and how do you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is communicating with the artisans, having them fulfil deadlines and follow spec sheets can be difficult given the fact they are used to working at their own pace.
If you could go back, what would you tell your younger self?
Don’t be too hard on yourself and pamper yourself every now and then.
