Emirates Woman had the opportunity of having a chat with Dr. Jaco Smith on his dedication to patients care and his passion about changing the way people view their dentist. As the owner of The Dental Studio which houses all of your dental needs under one roof with more than one-of-a-kind specialists in this facility, Dr. Jaco tells us more about his journey.

How did you start in your career?

I was always telling my parents that I wanted to be a doctor since I could remember. I did, however, lose my way a little in my teenage years, as you do, and thanks to sound guidance from my dad at the time, I managed to be accepted to study dentistry in South Africa. On completion of my studies, I ventured overseas and spend 7 years in the UK. Attracted by 365 days of sunshine, I arrived in Dubai in 2003, set up a practice and have been here ever since.

What are the most popular treatments you see and does this differ between locations?

We are a multi-speciality dental group and perform a wide array of general and specialised dental treatments. The most common general treatments include scale and polish, whitening and restorations, whilst most common specialised treatments include orthodontics, Hollywood smile and dental implants.

What’s the best process for whitening?

Zoom whitening is an office bleaching system which gives the fastest, safest and most effective whitening results. It has the ability to give both natural results or a ‘wow-factor’ result depending on the patient’s liking.

How long does the process take and what is the outcome we can expect?

The Zoom whitening system takes less than an hour and is carried out by completing 3 to 4 sessions which last for 15 minutes depending on the patients desired shade. Throughout each 15-minute session we will add more whitening gel and then reactivate the LED light. Results are instant and we can expect to achieve up to 8 shades whiter in less than an hour.

Tell us about the whitening procedure you follow?

Zoom Office bleaching is a light-accelerated technology which uses hydrogen peroxide gel which oxidises under the light and lifts tooth staining. Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) helps deliver enamel protection, improve lustre and reduce sensitivity.

How should you look after your teeth once whitened?

It is important to adhere to a white diet, avoiding staining foods and drinks for 48hours after whitening. It is also important to regularly attend your dentist and your dental hygienist to keep your teeth cavity-free and stain-free.

If you were not a dentist, watcher career path might you have chosen?

I wanted to be a fighter pilot (I’m of the Top Gun era) or a professional dancer.
