The iconic Gateway of India in Mumbai, where the F/W 2023 presentation is supposed to unfold, will stand tall as the perfect scenic backdrop for this momentous occasion. India, the land of culture, heritage and indomitable craftsmanship holds a special place in Maria Grazia’s journey at Dior. Apart from the that, the founder of the French luxury house also has a great admiration for the nation. In a unique celebration of Indian savoir-faire, Dior attempts to further strengthen it’s bond with a country with a large apetite for luxury.

A show that was a long time coming, routes back to Dior’s long and formidable partnership with the Chanakya School of Craft, founded by designers Monica Shah and Karishma Swali in 2017. Maria Grazia has created the embroidery and backdrop artworks of countless collections with the Chanakya School of Craft. The narrative of supporting and empowering female artisans is of utmost importance at this school—a virtue, the Creative Director strongly advocates herself.

Last December, Maria Grazia’s showcase in Paris had a strong Indian influence in terms of craft, textiles and the colours—coming to the source from where her inspiration originated is a full circle moment for the Creative Director. Before this, the last international presentation that happened at the Gateway of India was the YSL show in 1989, after which, this is the first time a global luxury brand is making a comeback at the same historical spot.
