Fashion muse Iris Apfel has opened the doors of her warehouse, and wardrobe, selling more than 800 pieces of jewellery, vintage furniture and accessories to the public via the luxury flash sale website One Kings Lane.
The 92-year-old’s staggering collection of one-of-a-kind finds, from a lifetime of shopping, is only on sale for seven days with prices ranging from Dhs107 to Dhs33,055. Among the unusual and eclectic items are colourful vintage Kilim’s, antique Art Deco side tables and European framed chairs. There is also an extensive set of jewellery including Iris’s trademark statement bangles and beaded necklaces. Speaking of the collection in an interview with One Kings Lane, Iris said: “A lot of the things in this sale come from periods of my travels, which were fairly extensive. I feel very grateful I had the unusual opportunity of seeing the end of the Old World.”
When asked about her decision to allow One Kings Lane to clear out her warehouse, Iris added: “I just want to get my stuff out. I want it to all go so I can just make it easy on everybody.”
The former decorator and textile designer, known for her flamboyant dressing, big round glasses and quirky style began her career in the fashion industry at the industry trade paper Women’s Wear Daily and later founded the international textile firm Old World Weavers with her husband, Carl Apfel, until they retired in 1992. At the age of 83 – 13 years into her retirement – Iris became one of New York’s biggest fashion icon’s after the New York Metropolitan Museum staged an exhibition of her wardrobe. Over recent years Iris’ bold, colourful wardrobe has been the inspiration to top designers including Ralph Lauren and has produced collaborations with HSN and Mac Cosmetics.
