Starting the New Year like a royal

From fireworks at Burj Al Arab, to a selfie with HH Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai, it seems like Cristiano Ronaldo just had the coolest New Year ever. The footballer is in Dubai for the 10th edition of the annual Globe Soccer Awards, which will be held on Thursday.

The Portuguese player and Sheikh Hamdan met today and posted pictures on both their Instagram accounts. The Dubai Royal captioned the selfie, “A great player and a greater friend @cristiano.” Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s picture garnered more than 1.3 million likes in under an hour, with the caption, “Great time together @faz3 ! #mydubai”

The 33-year-old footballer was accompanied to Dubai by his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez, his son Cristiano Jr, and friends. Ronaldo and his entourage rang in the New Year while watching the Burj Al Arab fireworks, and he took to Instagram to share pictures from the night.

Over the years, more than 90 Globe Soccer Awards have been presented to some of football’s biggest names. The Juventus striker is just one of the many stars expected to show up to the awards show on Thursday. He is in the running for the Best Player Award, which would be his fifth win if he claims it.
