Mango, a brand synonymous with chic-yet-accessible fashion, has consistently managed to strike that delicate balance. One of its most recent achievements is the SELECTION collection, a curated line of elevated essentials that reimagines classic wardrobe staples with contemporary flair. Behind this thoughtful design process is a creative vision deeply rooted in quality, versatility, and a commitment to delivering pieces that last through seasons.
In this exclusive interview with Creative Director, Justicia Ruano, we dive into the creative journey behind this collection. From the inspiration behind the collection’s standout pieces to insights on the global fashion scene, this conversation offers a look into what makes Mango a lasting favorite among women everywhere.
The SELECTION collection highlights “timeless classics reimagined.” Can you elaborate on the design process for this collection?
With Selection we allow ourselves to think big to create classic yet contemporary pieces in a great quality fabrics. These three elements combined truly make a timeless piece. So we start thinking about the staple pieces we would like to wear for the season looking of this combination between timeless and fresh shapes and silhouettes that we develop in the richest fabrics to create really special pieces.
The press release mentions versatility as a key element. Can you share some specific examples from the collection that showcase this adaptability?
We believe that today we need pieces that can take us through the day with no effort. For instance, I believe a good slip dress can work magic in your wardrobe. Whether you pair it with boots and coats for the day or with delicate sandals for a night look I believe it always creates on point looks. I also believe in the power of a good coat, like the camel one in the collection, to elevate any look, day or night.
Fur-effect outerwear adds a statement piece. Was there a specific inspiration behind this choice, and how does it fit into the overall aesthetic of the collection?
We love a fur-effect piece because it always elevates your look, both for day or evening, while it keeps the cozy element. We always see them as statement pieces that fit perfectly in the Selection concept.
The collection emphasizes high-quality fabrics. How do the chosen materials contribute to the concept of “everyday elegance”?
Fabrics can actually change the piece. For Selection we are able to choose the best quality fabrics – wool, silk, viscose among others – to create more elevated pieces that are destined to stay in your wardrobe for many years.
You’ve been with Mango for many years. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the way urban women approach fashion during your time with the company?
I believe that customers are much more educated about fashion now than they used to be years ago. They are widely in touch with trends, and they know what they are looking for when they come to Mango.
How has the Mango design philosophy evolved under your leadership?
I would say that our philosophy of reinterpreting the trends through the Mango lens is something that has been in our DNA since the very beginning and hasn’t changed. This said, I truly believe that we have been able to create an amazing team that is really knows how to offer the seasonal trends with our signature design.
What are you most proud of achieving at Mango, specifically in relation to the SELECTION collection or the brand as a whole?
At Mango, we are convinced that focusing on quality is a no return path. This applies to all Mango collections but specially to Selection. The capsule is designed to create very special high-quality pieces that will stay in your wardrobe for many seasons which allows you to wear them many times which ultimately is what we are aiming for.
Mango has a global presence. How do you ensure the SELECTION collection resonates with women across different cultures and demographics?
We believe that today, customers around the world share a common taste around fashion and trends. It usually happens that a hero piece is so in many different markets. As for demographics, we are truly convinced that age is not a relevant aspect anymore when choosing how to dress so every collection can resonate throughout all many different customers.
What initially drew you to a career in fashion design?
I was always fascinated by fashion from a young age, always playing to dress up so I naturally tended to educate myself in this field.
Who are some of your creative inspirations in the fashion world?
I usually tend to look up to the classics, but truly anyone who has a vision and passionately pursues it can be an inspiration.
Beyond design, what other skills do you believe are essential for a successful Creative Director?
I would say that being able to create the right team around you is really key. People who are truly passionate about the job and about the brand. The final result will always be as good as your team is.
As a leader in the fashion industry, what advice would you give to aspiring designers?
The fashion industry is not for the faint of heart but if you really love it, educate yourself, believe in yourself and the rest will follow.
