Oscar-nominated costume designer reveals all.
The live-action remake of the beloved Disney tale Aladdin has been eagerly anticipated by fans and so far no one seems disappointed by this new take on a classic.
Despite a new cast, new songs and some new twists, some of the elements beautifully reflect the 1992 animation, especially the costumes. They were overseen by the celebrated costume designer Michael Wilkinson who wanted to keep the magic of the story present, but also be authentic to the setting.

He dived deep into researching clothing, art and sculpture of the Middle East region and imagery throughout the centuries from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights). Taking animation into a live production allowed him to focus on the details of each piece. Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott, enjoyed 10 outfit changes which consisted of silks, paisley print, gold beading and plenty of peacock motifs – a bird which is symbolic in the Middle East.

“A good metaphor [for Jasmine] is a peacock [trapped] in a royal garden — a beautiful rarefied world — that wants to be a free spirit,” Wilkinson explained to Fashionista.
Aladdin’s (portrayed by Mena Massoud) signature red vest featured Moroccan-style embroidery while for Will Smith, Wilkinson had a lot of fun dressing up his character of Genie in the fabrics sourced from India, the Middle East, Turkey and Morocco.
Aladdin is out in cinemas now.
