Four local beauties rewind their looks to give classic cosmetic trends a modern makeover…
THE MOD SQUAD
Seen At: Gucci, Prada, Peter Som and Versace
Local Beauty: Laura Brown, fashion and beauty blogger at buynowbloglater.com
The Mood: Next-level lashes a la Twiggy were the 1960s look that launched a thousand references. Think a graphic monochrome palette, clean lines and a razor-sharp bob.
The Modern Update: Less about precision liner and more of an ode to the classic cat eye, Gucci’s modern interpretation was heavy on the glamour, as were the soft beehives molded into manes at Versace and Peter Som.
Get The Look
● Opt for a matte base with a velvet finish
● Use a pale pink liner to trace your waterline
● Double up on mascara with heavy coats on top and bottom lashes
THAT 70S SHOW
Seen At: Matthew Williamson, Giorgio Armani, Mary Katrantzou and Naeem Khan
Local Beauty: Luiza Khabibullina, Public Relations & Marketing Manager
The Mood: Way back when, disco curls and Woodstock-worthy braids framed bronzed skin and bold brick-red lips. The aim of the game? A luxe, bohemian finish that would make 1970s queen Talitha Getty proud.
The Modern Update: A little less flower child and a little more rock-chic, unbraided curls added a relaxed appeal at Giorgio Armani, whilst all-over bronzing was replaced with a subtle glow at Naeem Khan and Matthew Williamson.
Get The Look
● Use a high shine bronzer to contour your cheekbones
● Create loose curls with towel-dried hair and lots of mousse
● Fill in lips with a brown-red shade
BORN IN THE ’80s
As Seen At: Anna Sui, Kenzo, Vivienne Westwood and Chanel
Local Beauty: Samar Saliba, Account Manager at Toh PR
The Mood: Big hair and bold colours defined the 1980s as the decade of excess, with strong cheeks, bright eyes and loud lips all vying for attention against outfits that were every bit as OTT.
The Modern Update: Less Madonna circa The Immaculate Collection, and more ‘I actually have to be taken seriously at work’, corkscrew curls won us over at Vivienne Westwood, as did paint pot shades on lids and lips at Chanel.
Get The Look
● Keep your skin and lips as neutral as possible
● Coax out a heavy curl with lots of backcombing
● Play up your eyes with high-octane shades on the outer corners
TEEN SPIRIT
Local Beauty: Noor Breish, Creative Director at designer-24.com
The Mood: Defined by androgynous, waif-like models with eyebrows as tiny as their waists, girl power reigned supreme with grunge and minimalism the two iconic movements of the 1990s.
The Modern Update: The normcore foundation of simple skin with poker straight hair remained at Topshop Unique but bigger brows and glossier locks gave it a much-needed update at Missoni and The Row.
Get The Look
● Make sure your locks are as poker straight as possible
● Keep a sharp eyebrow pencil at hand to define your arches
● Paint on a frosted lip with heavy taupe lipliner
