Cher, Marc Jacobs

We’ve seen Joan Didion for Celine and Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent, now singer Cher has become the latest unlikely – and fabulous – frontwoman for a major fashion campaign.

A snap of the superstar wearing an all black ensemble for Marc Jacobs was posted on Instagram by British stylist Katie Grand.

Jacobs has previously called upon Kendall Jenner (19), Miley Cyrus (22), and Anja Rubik (31) to star in his campaigns, but appears to have selected the 69-year-old Oscar winner to model his latest line.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs is known for taking an unconventional approach to his campaigns

It’s not the first time the designer has taken an unconventional approach to his brand. Earlier this year he launched a global search for potential faces for his Marc by Marc Jacobs line on Instagram, inviting would-be models to use the hashtag #CastMeMarc, and one of his most famous adverts starred Victoria Beckham (back in the days before she ran her own fashion empire) sitting in a giant Marc Jacobs carrier bag.

Celine

Inherent cool: Juergen Teller shot 80-year-old author Didion for Celine

Cher joins writer Joan Didion, singer Joni Mitchell and 93-year-old fashion icon Iris Apfel as one of a new breed of supermodel, chosen for their intellect, their talent, their lasting star power or their inherent coolness (see Didion in those Celine shades for details) rather than a flawless face or physique. These women’s faces tell stories of lives well lived, and it seems designers, and fashion fans, can’t get enough.

The sneak peek of Cher, who was shot by photographer David Sims for the campaign, attracted a flood of comments on Instagram, with one user declaring: “This is iconic already”.

The high profile modelling gig is a return to the spotlight for the showbiz legend, whose latest album, Closer To The Truth, was released in 2013.
