Last night saw the cream of the fashion industry seated front row at Diane von Furstenberg’s A/W14 runway show at Spring Studios in New York for Fashion Week. Prior to the event, Emirates Woman headed backstage to talk to the designer about her latest collection.
Amid the backstage chaos, with Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn running in for last minute fittings, style editor Jade grabbed Emirates Woman’s former columnist Diane to get her take on the hot, new range.
“The collection is called Bohemian Wrapsody, it’s about the ballerina escaping the revolution and going to Berlin and Paris,” explained Diane. “She wears all the clothes she owns on her. But of course it’s the all about the prints, mixing the prints and the wraps.”
On the fashion front, gorgeous, vibrant hues are prominent in the A/W14 collection, but for the beauty look, Diane was a little more experimental. She said: “It’s like a little ballerina’s, for when they’re practicing not when they are performing. So, it’s a little messy – it’s warm, lush and brilliant.”
The highly anticipated show kick started at 5pm with Karlie Kloss, Karen Elson, Joan Small and Jourdan Dunn gliding down the runway to a live performance from St Vincent.
As promised, Diane packed in the prints, from stars and swirls to love knots and rose buds, layering them with matching-print fur coats in bold colours.
The show finale saw the ‘ballerinas’ strut down the runway in gilded gold wrap dresses as flecks of glittering confetti fell from the ceiling – a perfect way to celebrate 40 years of the iconic wrap dress.
