Taking over the French Riviera
The Cannes Film Festival is one of the film industry’s most prestigious events. It is home to some of the year’s best movies, but also the best red-carpet looks and moments. After all, who can forget Blake Lively showcasing her baby bump in a tight blue Atelier Versace gown.
The year, the festival’s 72nd edition is set to run from May 14 to 25, and include several red-carpets and photo-calls – and we are looking forward to show stopping ensembles. However, what we are most excited for is to see which Arab designers will make it to the red-carpet. Over the past few years, we have seen dazzling pieces from the likes of Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad on the carpet, worn by some of the industry’s biggest names.
In honour of the Cannes coming up on May 14, here are our top 10 looks by Arab designers:
Nadine Labaki – Elie Saab
The Oscar-nominated director was a big winner at last year’s Cannes. She dominated the festival both on and off the red-carpet, and stunned in Elie Saab at the screening of her Palm d’Or nominated film Capharnaum. She wore a strapless emerald dress, which featured a velvet bodice and a flowy skirt.
Bella Hadid – Elie Saab
The Palestinian-American supermodel walked the Cannes Film Festival red carpet at the premiere for BlacKkKlansman in a sparkly silver gown by Elie Saab. Bella’s halter-neck gown featured a super low back, and when she turned around, we saw that she was actually wearing a thin, silver body chain with her daring gown.
Dame Helen Mirren – Elie Saab
Last year, the English actress turned to Elie Saab for the premiere of Girls of the Sun. She wore a blue velvet haute couture off-shoulder gown, which made her look like an elegant Medieval Queen.
Alessandra Ambrosio – Zuhair Murad
The Brazilian Victoria Secret model stunned at the premiere of the Sean Penn’s The Last Face (2016). She wore a couture strapless, beaded jumpsuit with a skirt overlay by Lebanese designer, Zuhair Murad.
Sonam Kapoor – Elie Saab
The Bollywood actress turned heads in 2017 at the screening of The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. She wore a gold tulle embroidered gown, from Elie Saab’s Spring 2017 Couture collection.
Winnie Harlow – Zuhair Murad
Sticking with ball gowns for a moment, the model attended the Loveless (2017) premiere in an electric blue silk number, from Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad.
Kristen Stewart – Reem Acra
In 2012, the Twilight actress wore a dress by the Lebanese designer to the premiere of Cosmopolis. She wore a bright crimson crepe gown, which featured a V neckline and a sheer lace back, from the Pre-Fall collection.
Aishwarya Rai – Rami Kadi
Last year, the Indian beauty stunned at the Sink Or Swim (Le Grand Bain) premiere. She wore a strapless minty architectural column gown, which featured a sweeping, embellished train. One can’t forget Aishwarya’s out of this world sculptural updo.
Nicole Scherzinger – Ashi Studio
The former Pussycat Dolls singer looked glamorous at the BlacKkKlansman premiere. She wore a white gown with an elaborate paisley lace skirt and feathered bodice from the Beirut based label’s Spring/Summer 2018 couture collection.
Deepika Padukone – Ashi Studio
Sometimes you’ve just got to turn it up to 11. Indian actress Deepika Padukone turned to Lebanese house Ashi Studio for this hot pink frothy gown, which featured heavy ruffles, avant-garde sleeves, and an exaggerated matching long train.
Can’t wait to see which designers make it to this year’s red-carpet!
