Mario Dedivanovic is arguably regarded as one of the most influential makeup artists in the world.
Having been the long-standing makeup artist to Kim Kardashian, as well as launching his own line, Makeup by Mario, it’s safe to say he’s an expert in his field.
The makeup mogul recently visited Dubai at the Style Station in City Centre Mirdif where he presented a masterclass sharing all his tips and tricks. Emirates Woman also sat down with Mario to discuss his impressive career which spans over nearly two decades, where his love for makeup comes from and what it’s really like working with Kim K.
How did you begin your journey as a makeup artist?
Sephora is where it all began, and where my passion for makeup was discovered. I started my career in beauty as a Sephora Beauty Advisor, and it’s been a thrilling experience to come back to Sephora to launch my collection and see it grow all together.
What inspired you to launch your own makeup line?
It was a dream of mine for 20 years to launch my own makeup brand, and this is a rebirth in my career. I have the ability to now offer my artistry and niche techniques to the entire beauty community. I wanted to create a line for all women, to let them feel empowered. With the help of this launch, I was able to take my techniques and create them to be easy-to-use everyday products.

You’ve been Kim Kardashian’s long-standing makeup artist for a few years now. What’s it been like working with such an iconic figure in fashion & beauty?
It’s always an incredible experience working with Kim. I’ve been working with her for over 13 years, and she’s the ultimate client for a makeup artist because she is known for her covetable looks in the industry.
Did you expect Kim Kardashian’s contour to go viral? What was your reaction when it did?
We had no idea it would go viral. I was genuinely surprised because none of it was planned.
What, in your opinion, is the most important quality in a makeup artist?
Talent is only 50 per cent of being a great makeup artist, the other half is your professionalism, demeanour, taste and style, and being able to interpret what your client wants.
With face masks being the latest accessory, what’s your secret to mask-proof makeup?
Resilient makeup has always been important to me as a celebrity makeup artist. I always prep the skin with an emollient moisturiser, so it grabs onto the powders, then apply makeup in layers and set between layers with powder.

What are some of the most common mistakes you’ve noticed people make when doing their makeup?
One of the most common mistakes that I have seen lately is overlining too much of the bottom lip. When you overline the ends of the bottom lip, it drags the face down. This is why I created the Ultra Suede(tm) Sculpting Lip Pencil, and the Lip Lift technique. My technique lifts your appearance and gives you fuller-looking lips – just using makeup!
How do you stay abreast with all the latest beauty trends?
Social media has always been important to me as a creative.
Congratulations on being part of the City Centre Mirdif – Style Station exhibit. What did you enjoy most about the event?
This has been a great experience getting to travel again, and to one of my favorite places in the world. The Middle East has always been very special to me, and the people of Dubai have always been so supportive throughout the years. I’ve done a few Masterclasses in the region, and I’m always been so inspired by the culture and the women, they are truly glamourous at heart, and I love that. I can’t wait to come back to the UAE soon for the Makeup by Mario brand in early 2022.
