What do Muslim women need post-US election? According to this magazine, it’s protection.
A monthly beauty box is not a new idea (Birchbox is six years old, can you believe), but the latest one most definitely comes with a twist.
Muslim Girl, a US-based online magazine, is launching a monthly subscription that they’re calling the #MuslimGirlArmy Care Package.
And the debut box comes complete with a bottle of pepper spray.
Following Donald Trump’s victory as President-Elect of the USA, racially and religiously-motivated attacks have increased across the country, with many women saying they’re now too afraid to don their hijab.
Muslim Girl hope to change that with the self-defence care package, which also includes a copy of their Crisis Safety Manual for women, along with special safety tips and resources.
“The aim is to provide the most carefully curated products that are reflective Muslim women’s needs in today’s world,” the site announced. “It features a mixed variety of items from your favorite name brands to Muslim small businesses that you might not have heard of yet, but totally should. Consider this your monthly reminder to centre yourself, care for yourself, and treat yo’self.”
The boxes will be themed, according to the magazine helmed by American writer Amani al-Khatahtbeh, and the first delivery will be called the “Post-Election Care Package”.

The US$20 (Dhs74) package is designed to “cater to the Muslim woman’s lifestyle”, and the debut one is sponsored by none other than Dubai-based streetwear label Miella Fashion.
Also included will be a scarf (that can be worn as a hijab) and halal beauty products from Canadian company Tuesday In Love.

“It’s really sad that we have to talk about [safety], but it’s really the level of insecurity that Muslim woman are feeling right now,” Al-Khatahtbeh told Fortune. “A lot of social interactions are: ‘Are you staying safe?’ ‘Are you feeling okay?’ That’s where we are right now and it sucks.”
There’s no official word yet on whether the boxes will be shipped outside of the US – though we doubt the first one will, given its fiery contents.
However fortunately, with the UAE’s impressive focus on tolerance, we don’t have need for it.
Fingers crossed that’ll be the case for American Muslims in the very near future.
