When it comes to shopping in Dubai, we have plenty of options.
New things seem to be springing up all the time – always going bigger, better… and now, they’re going more bucolic.
Cityland Mall, a new project announced on Wednesday, will be the world’s first nature-inspired shopping destination when it opens in 2018.
The Dhs1.1 billion mall will be centred around “colossal” open-air botanic garden, which will feature 200,000 square feet of “awe-inspiring floral specimens”.
Situated near Global Village, the entire development will stretch a huge 2.2 million square feet, and the nature reserve will be free to enter.

It’s the brainchild of developers Cityland Group, which have already given the city the Dubai Miracle Garden and Dubai Butterfly Garden.
Their latest venture is equally as ecologically minded, with the mall’s “Central Park” set to feature a 300-year-old ancient tree garden, a Japanese garden, and a mini version of the aforementioned Miracle Garden.
There’s also going to be a walking track, a small water park, a rooftop garden, and a selection of restaurants and cafes overlooking the scenic spot.
It’ll also house a 3,000-seat amphitheatre (and a mini one for kids) for the performing arts, making it a real cultural and educational hotspot (as well as a place to sort out your new-season wardrobe).
The developers hope Cityland Mall will “cultivate a soulful experience” for shoppers and tourists, as well as importantly preserving some of nature’s rich biodiversity.
“This property furthers our legacy in championing green spaces that deliver meaningful entertainment and a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” said Abdel Naser Rahhal, vice chairman of Cityland Group.

“We are bucking the trend of visitors leaving the mall premises with only shopping bags. With Cityland Mall, they will also take home a part of nature and start the next day with rejuvenated spirit.”
Greenery aside, the mall will also welcome a diverse range of stores, a cinema, shaded parking for 6,000 cars, and more than 75 places to eat.
Spread over six themed pavilions (to represent all the different cultures in Dubai), the single-level destination will also feature a 100,000-square-foot hypermarket.
There’s no confirmation yet on what stores and restaurants shoppers can expect, but – as always – we’ll keep you updated.
What we do know is that in total there’ll be over 350 retail stores, nearly 50 per cent of which will be fashion.
Cityland Mall is slated to open in the second quarter of 2018, and developers expect a whopping 12 million people to visit a year.
They’re also hoping to open similar malls in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, as well as build several hotels surrounding the Dubai location.
