One is a brand synonymous with luxury, the other is set to become the cultural hub of the UAE, which makes the partnership between Van Cleef & Arpels and Dubai Opera one of the most exciting collaborations of the year.
Van Cleef & Arpels will exclusively sponsor the dance and ballet shows at the multi-format performing arts theatre located in the heart of Downtown Dubai.
For those who are confused as to why a luxury jewellery brand would team up with a theatre, let us explain. The world of dance and ballet has always been important to the French maison.
In 1939 Claude Arpels (the nephew of Louis Arpels) met George Balanchine, the famous choreographer and founder of the New York City Ballet, and invited him to the Fifth Avenue boutique. Their mutual passion for gems lead to the creation of Balanchine’s three-act ballet Jewels, which was first performed in 1967.
Ever since theatre has played an important role for the brand, with dance being a major source of inspiration. In 1940s the maison’s first ballerina clips were created at the request of Louis Arpels.
More recently in 2012, Natalie Portman’s husband, ballet star Benjamin Millepied collaborated with the brand.
Dubai Opera will stage two classical ballets: Coppelia on September 15 and 17, and Giselle on September 16. Both will be performed by the Russian State baller and Orchestra of Siberia.
