It’s nice to take pride in your living space, and a little bit of upcycling can really make the difference between a house and a home.
It doesn’t even require you to fork out that much – and most of of the following home hacks can be accomplished with easily acquirable items.
So if you’re soon to commit to a décor overhaul or are just looking to spruce up a room, here are 12 of our favourite simple interior design tips to make a space just that little bit more unique.
Jazz it up
If you find your room needs a little brightening up, paint over some cheap furniture in bold colours.
Clip it up
Pin up clipboards instead of posters on your walls. It’ll make whatever you choose to display easy to change, and the clips can be painted in different colours for added effect.
Pillow power
Is your bed looking a little plain? Buy some patterned pillowcases that match either your bedspread or your wallpaper. Sticking to one colour palette will keep the room looking organised.
Bedside beauties
Get creative with a custom bedside table. It could be a repainted bar stool, barrel, upside-down basket, or even an old bass drum.
Painted walls
Add a bit of character to a room and give the illusion of higher ceilings by painting just three-quarters of the way up the wall.
Wall-mounted collage
Create a montage of all your favourite memories by hanging up photos in either themed or mismatched frames.
Feel-good fireplace
Got a fireplace you don’t use? Fill it up with different-sized pillar candles to give it that warm glow you’d otherwise be missing.
Hidden routers
Internet routers are a staple part of most households, and tend to be left out in unsightly locations – cables and all. Remove the cover of a thick, hardback book and place it around the router to cover it up.

Lightbulb ideas
Instead of disposing of your old lightbulbs, upcycle them by turning them into mini terrariums or plant pots that can then be hung up, placed on a mantlepiece or stuck on the wall.
Cheap curtains
Don’t want to fork out on a new pair of window-fancies? Buy an inexpensive duvet cover and cut it in half to hang as curtains.
Colourful doors
For that little extra flair, paint the sides of a door. It’ll help perk up the room without being over-the-top.
Jazzy lamps
Coat the inside of lampshades with colourful glitter to create a neat reflective effect, while giving a room that little extra bit of glam.
