Remember that New Year’s resolution you made to get fit? Well, if it’s not exactly going to plan half way through the year, don’t feel as if you have to wait until next year to start over.
If all you need is that little extra push to get out there, there’s a host of apps that cater to that – ranging
from the hardcore fitness apps, the slightly more silly and the motivational ones.
So if you’re looking to drop the pounds in the same way that Brexit did, now’s your chance.
Here are six of our favourite fitness and motivational apps to get you up and moving.
Couch to 5k
An app that’s known for having helped bundles of new runners move from the couch to the finish line.
Couch to 5k is asking you to spend just 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week, for nine weeks – in order to get you to be able to run 5k.
The app features a training plan by professional trainers, with the option of selecting between four different virtual coaches. Little audio cues will pop up during each workout to keep you motivated on the treadmill while you blast away on the in-app music player.
If 5k sounds a little easy though, perhaps you should skip straight to Couch to 10k.
Available on the App Store and Play Store.
CarrotFit
CarrotFit takes a somewhat more unique approach to whipping you into shape, with the app’s description calling Carrot: “A sadistic AI construct with one simple goal: to transform your flabby carcass into a grade A specimen of the human race.”
Carrot will yell at you, threaten you, inspire, ridicule and bribe you to get you to work out. If you manage to shed some pounds, Carrot will reward you with “fabulous prizes, such as cat facts and permission to watch your friend eat a bag of potato chips.”
Joking aside, Carrot will still track your progress, offer up exercises, crunch the numbers and it even syncs with Apple’s Health app.
Available on the App Store.

Nike Training Club App
With over 100 workouts and training routines created by Nike Master Trainers, the new and improved Nike Training Club app has now been redesigned to suit both women and men.
The app’s Adaptive Training helps you slot fitness into a busy schedule, with the user being given the option to rate how hard a workout was – so that the next session can be adjusted accordingly. Weekly “featured athelete” workouts, inspired by the world’s elite athletes also helps to keep the sessions fresh.
Oh, and if you’re the type to flaunt your progress, the app has its own photo sharing function, including stickers and tags – so you can either inspire others, or find others to be inspired by.
Available on the App Store and Play Store.
Zombies, Run!
You’ve barely made it out the door before you hear them on your six. They’re right on your heels, and they’re everywhere. There’s only one thing to do, run away!
Zombies, Run! is an immersive running game and audio adventure, where the app’s audio drama puts you at the centre of your very own zombie adventure.
Once you’ve selected one of the app’s 240 different stories, the only way to save yourself from being eaten by zombies is to run for real – collecting supplies along the way to build your base back home.
The app syncs your run and weight with Apple Health, so you can keep track of your progress easily while becoming the master of the zombie apocalypse.
Available on the App Store and Play Store.
Spotify Running
An app that tracks how many steps you’re taking per minute, and then finds music with the beats per minute to match it.
Say you’re running at 170 steps per minute, Spotify Running will find a song with 170 beats per minute – because we all know that running in time with music makes us feel like a boss.
You won’t have to worry about setting up playlists or finding good running songs – Spotify Running does it all for you.
Available on the Spotify website.
The Rock Clock
While not technically a fitness app, we felt The Rock Clock deserved a mention.
Created by the man who should’ve ended up as one of the US Presidential nominees – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – The Rock Clock allows you to enter a personal goal, set your morning alarm and then wake up every morning to a new message from The Rock himself.
There’s no snooze feature. No more “just 10 minutes longer” moments. Just 25 custom alarm tones created by The Rock himself.
If you’re living in the US, or just fancy getting out of the GMT timezone, the app allows you to switch to ‘Rock Time’ – which means your alarm will sync with The Rock’s so you can get up when he does.
Available on the App Store and Play Store.
