Is it just us, or has the UAE suddenly exploded it’s cultural scene? This weekend, much like the previous few weeks, is packed with fashion and art, with the likes of Fashion Forward and World Art Dubai. We can just about squeeze in Comic Con, food and shopping though, it is the weekend after all…
Becoming a Superhero
It’s time to play dress as The Middle East Film and Comic Con returns this weekend. As well as celebrating our favourite ‘super’ characters, the spectacular event also has a charitable side with Comic Con teaming up with official not-for-profit partner Superhope – a charity that rings joy to children battling with cancer (the foundation’s founder was nominated for an Emirates Woman Award ). As well as an iboothme photobooth to turn passers by into superheros, the main purpose of the collaboration is to bring sick children a wonderful surprise. In partnership with fashion designer, Reemami, and private car hire, Uber, the kids will have their imaginary costume sketched and created. They will then don their outfit and be taken to a photoshoot where they will be transformed into a superhero. Comic Com runs from April 9-11 at Zabeel Hall at the World Trade Center, Dubai. Visit the Comic Con website.
Putting together the finishing touches
With Fashion Forward taking over the city this weekend (see below), it’s time to grab those finishing touches. Aigner’s new Cybill Collection comes in a rainbow of colours, to add that ‘pop’ to your ensemble. We’re going to get clashing and creative with our threads for some Instagram-worthy #WIW posts. From Dhs2,650 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi boutiques.
Donning our FROW finest
It’s the fifth season of the hotly anticipated Fashion Forward, and this year it is shaping up to be a corker. As well as being a huge showcase of the region’s finest designers, you’ll find exciting fashion talks, an opportunity to meet the models, and a chance to shop the looks at The Garden. Look out for Emirates Woman coverage on the website, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. For more information about Fashion Forward, which runs from April 10-13, including a full schedule, visit here.
Indulging In Too Much Tapas
If you’re avoiding the fashion action, and yet another Friday brunch doesn’t appeal, get yourself down to El Sur for a sophisticated tapas lunch. With 14 dishes, including two dessert options, it’s ideal for those who can never decide what to order. The soft drink package is Dhs175, and house select beverages for Dhs245. Every Friday from 12.30pm until 3.30pm. Visit the website.
Having an Art Attack
100 artists, 25 countries, 1000 artworks. Yes, that’s right, the flood of creative events in Dubai just keeps coming. This weekend sees the return of World Art Dubai, hosting modern, contemporary and fine art from homegrown and international talent. The event includes works from some of Hollywood’s A-list including Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman (read more about that here). World Art Dubai runs from April 9-11 at Dubai World Trade Centre. Visit the website.
Being safe in the sun
Being in the UAE, it’s easy to ignore sun exposure – even those of us who don’t sunbathe are exposed to the UV rays on a daily basis. Ensuring we look after the health of our skin, Bioderma are bringing a unique UV camera to the beach this Saturday in order to test for damage. The all-day event will also include sports activities and refreshments. The team are there to promote the new Photoderm MAX Aquafluide SPF50+ UVA 24, which protects the skin’s immunity and DNA. The Bioderma team will be at Fazza Beach Club (previously called Kite Surf Beach), from 12pm until 6pm.
Grabbing a Taco
As a world-renowned chef, restaurateur and television personality, Richard Sandoval knows how to combine exciting flavours. The owner of Mexican restaurant Maya has just designed a new menu for the Dubai kitchen that gives a modern twist to Latina classics. Expect dishes like Enchiladas, Tacos and Fajitas, but with added panache. Maya Modern Mexican Kitchen and Lounge, Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa. Visit the website.
