Dubai is fast becoming a destination for all things arty, and Meet d3, running from April 2-4, is the latest in a spectacular season of creative events. Following on from the likes of Art Dubai and Design Days Dubai, Meet d3 brings together designers, artists, musicians, retailers and even unique dining experiences for a celebration of talent. The tree-day event is free and no pre-registration is required, so whether you’re into food or fashion, design or music, there’s really no excuse not to take part.
Also known as Dubai Design District, d3 is a hub for creativity, showcasing innovation in all its forms. The luxurious space is the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. The programme is packed with workshops and entertainment across all categories. Without further ado, we bring you Emirates Woman’s guide to Meet d3’s unmissable events…
MUSIC
Jon Newman
As a celebration of innovation and talent, it’s little wonder Meet d3 have chosen fresh-faced Jon Newman to kick-off the line-up. This 24-year-old soul singer found fame as the vocalist on two popular Rudimendal tracks – Feel the Love and Not Giving In. He went on to release a hit UK number one as a solo artist with Love Me Again. If you think a gig with someone of Jon’s credentials is going to be a chargeable extra, or VIP only, think again. Just like the rest of the programme, it’s all free. Main Stage, April 2, 9.30pm until 11.30pm.
Qusai Khader & Malikah
Bringing a local flavour to the music programme, prominent hip hop artist and Arab’s Got Talent host Qusai Khader is set to team up with the so-called Queen of Arab hip hop, Malikah, for an explosive performance. Main Stage, April 4, 7.30pm until 8.30pm.
Dub FX
One of the early purveyors of the loop pedal, Dub FX started out as a beat boxing busker, whose YouTube videos went viral. His mixture of dub step and reggae has seen him preform around the world. He remains an independent artist, spreading his name with live gigs and word of mouth. Main Stage, April 4, 9.30pm until 11pm.
FOOD
Andy Wahloo Tent
This is fusion food of a different variety, with a culinary/music collaboration. Moroccan-born pop artist, Hassan Hajjaj, and his friend, award-winning restaurateur, Mourad Mazouz, are back for another dining experience that’s sure to entertain. As well as Parisian-Algerian food, you can expect a packed schedule of DJs across the three-day event. On every day, check schedule for timings.
Chewing Gum Factory
Hailed as modern day Willy Wonkas, Bompas & Parr are running a workshop like no other at this year’s event, with the world’s first chewing gum microbrewery. This workshop will create weird and wacky chewing gum flavours from scratch, with up to 40,000 combinations to choose from. As a theatrical food duo, Sam Bompas and Harry Parr are a pair that like to play with their food – in the past, their events have included multi-sensory fireworks. This is one not to miss! DESIGN
Lasvt Glass Blowing
The interactive line-up includes a workshop by lighting brand Lasvit. The design house is known for its incredible lighting sculptures that play with design and trends. The hourly classes are held throughout the event, and teach the art of glassblowing. Space is limited so arrive early. For more information visit here.
Edelkoort Pop Up Trend Lab
Whether your passion for design is a career or confined to your personal living space, Li Edelkoort is your lady. The Dutch trend forecaster from Edelkoort knows what’s in before the It girls, and can give valuable insights to design enthusiasts. Evolution of Emirati Dress
A fascinating exhibition, for locals, expats and visitors alike, Evolution of Emirati Dress showcases the different styles of women in the UAE from 1960 to 2011.
