The Dress is a collection of the greatest moments in fashion history, beautifully illustrated by former graphic designer Megan Hess. The aim of the book is to highlight that while fashion is ever-changing, there are certain dresses that capture a moment, the spirit of a generation and the indefinable energy of a fashion icon.
From Audrey Hepburn’s black gown in Breakfast At Tiffany’s to Marilyn Monroe’s chic pink number from Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend and Princess Diana’s extravagant wedding gown, complete with a 25ft train, in The Dress Megan pays homage to the most iconic dresses in fashion industry, especially gowns that continue to resonate with audiences.
However, it’s not all illustrations, the book is also interspersed with historical anecdotes, famous quotes, and scene-setting landscape images which enlighten the reader of the social themes surrounding the fashion moment in question. As such the book is appealing to the style elite and novices.
If Megan’s signature style seems familiar it’s probably because you recognise her work on Candace Bushnell’s New York Times bestselling book Sex And The City. She has also illustrated portraits for Vanity Fair and Time magazine, as well as creating iconic accessories for Henri Bendel and illustrating the windows of Bergdorf Goodman in New York.
