It wasn’t Rihanna, neither was it Michelle Williams, or even the ever-stylish Emma Stone, no, the sartorially savvy maven graced with this year’s People Magazine Best Dressed crown was none other than Taylor Swift. Let’s just take a minute to all be suitably shocked by that news.
Right, now let’s delve into exactly how this happened. On the surface, it seems that there are far more deserving candidates for the accolade (we’re looking at you Diane Kruger), but having looked into it we can confirm that People, whilst not hitting the nail 100 per cent on the head, aren’t going quite as rogue as first thought in choosing Taylor Swift as their best dressed.
Case in point, the country popstrel rocked up to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards wearing It-Brit designer Mary Katrantzou; a painfully cool wink to all those in the know. It’s a far cry from the wide-eyed, ringleted beauty running around in a frou frou frock in 2007 at the 41st Annual CMA Awards . Truly dedicated to a princess aesthetic, but nodding to her country and western roots, Swift was famed for pairing acres of tulle with stomping cowboy boots on stage, on the regular. Anyone remember that?

Gladly we can say now you’re more likely to find her owning the red carpet in floor-sweeping Gucci Premiére, lips painted a scandalous shade of red and flowing locks styled into a sassy bob.
Her off-duty style isn’t too shabby either, with matchy-matchy co-ords being a go-to for her this summer (and she’s not a label snob, either – asos.com, Topshop and H&M have all been papped on her, mixed up with high-end accessories from Prada, Brian Atwood and Miu Miu).
As style evolutions go, Swift’s come a long way. We’re still not convinced she deserved to beat Emma Stone by a full four places but, hey, we appreciate her efforts. And her songs, too, but let’s keep that between us…
