Fashion Features Editor Olivia Phillips answers this week’s most pressing fashion questions from where to find the perfect beach bag to how to nail androgynous chic.
Q.) I love the androgynous look but I don’t want to end up looking too boyish. How can I strike a balance?
A.) Parisian cool-girl label Sandro will have this look all sewn up for you next season, with their A/W14 collection being an ode to mannish chic. There’s a few important things to remember, though: proportion and modesty. If you go oversized in one area, balance it out in another. Show just a little bit of skin. A judicious flash of ankle or stomach keeps the look on the feminine side. Finally, add a heel. It makes all the difference.
Q.) Living in a country where you spend a disproportionate amount of time on the beach, a good beach bag is a total necessity. I’m really uninspired by everything I’ve seen in the shops, though. Can you recommend anything different?
A.) I’ve always though that the iconic Longchamp Pliage was the ideal shape and size to take to the beach – throw a towel, sunscreen and a copy of Emirates Woman in there and you’re good to go! The Parisian fashion house has started doing bespoke versions, so choose your leather colour and emboss your initials on the side for one slick tote.
Q.) It’s my best friend’s birthday coming up and I want to get her something thoughtful but quirky. What do you suggest?
A.) You can’t go wrong with jewellery, and you also can’t go wrong with S*uce, a haven for girlie gifts with an offbeat spin. I’m currently obsessing over these buddy rings. They put a smile on my face and remind me of being given half of a Forever Friends locket by my best mate in primary school. These MarMar rings are slightly more grown up, but are still infused with that sense of fun and whimsy.
