She may have just been embarrassingly face palmed by Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence at Dior’s fashion show, but luckily Emma Watson has something to smile about – she’s been appointed UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
The Harry Potter actress joins the United Nations organisation that is dedication to furthering gender equality. While it is not unusual for celebrities to be UN ambassadors – other A-list representatives include David Beckham, Shakira, Katy Perry and Lionel Messi – the 24-year-old beauty earned her role for her actions as opposed to her high profile credentials.
According Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Under Secretary-General and executive director of UN Women, the star earned her humanitarian role thanks to her “intellect and passion” promoting education for girls in Zambia and Bangladesh.
Adding: “We are thrilled and honoured to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of UN Women. The engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century, and I am convinced that Emma’s intellect and passion will enable UN Women’s messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally.”
Meanwhile an excited Emma, who recently graduated from Brown University, said of her new role: “Being asked to serve as [a] UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling. The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly. Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life, that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.”
The good news of Emma following in the footsteps of fellow celebrity do-gooder Angelia Jolie couldn’t have come at a better time. It certainly detracts attention from the her embarrassing run in with award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence at the Christian Dior Haute Couture show.
