Chris Martin has broken his silence about the breakdown of his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, blaming himself for the separation.

In an honest, hour-long, interview with Radio One’s ZaneLowe, which will be aired later today, Monday April 28, the Coldplay front man opened up about his “conscious uncoupling” with the Hollywood actress. Opening up about the end of his 10-year marriage to Gwyneth, he said: “About two years ago I was a mess, really, because I can’t enjoy the thing that we are good at and I can’t enjoy the great things around me because I’m burdened by this.”

“I’ve got to not blame anyone else and make some changes,” the 38-year-old awkwardly continued, hinting that the split may not be as harmonious as 41-year old Gwyneth would have us believe. The couple, who have two children together, Apple, 10, and Moses, eight, announced their split on Gwyneth’s website Goop in March.

While the blonde beauty has been determined to keep quiet about the split, Chris told the Radio One DJ that it was personal issues that led to the end of their marriage. He said: “I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way. I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it’s love or money, kids or illness.”

He added: “I wouldn’t use the word breakdown, this was more a realisation about trying to grow up basically. If you can’t open yourself up, you can’t appreciate the wonder inside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, but because of your own issues you cannot let that be celebrated in the right way.”

Though he mentions no names and doesn’t go into specifics about his “issues”, it seems he feels responsible. In the past, the singer has confessed to dabbling in the dark side of the music industry.

The first sign of trouble was in 2008 when he revealed a sleeping pill habit. Years later, in 2011, he spoke of further problems. He admitted: “Success and fame, alcohol and drugs. We’ve been through all of those things.” During the same interview, he also implied there were marital difficulties, indicating that the couple have struggled with their relationship for many years. He added: “Coming home to an Oscar winner… it’s not all bad. As you get older, you have kids, but there is also a lot more sadness.”

Despite these troubles, many saw Chris and Gwyneth as Hollywood’s golden couple – an image that it seems Gwyneth is keen to retain. There has been much discussion about her choice of words in announcing the split, which she calls “conscious uncoupling” rather than separation or divorce.

Recent reports suggest that some friends of the award-winning actress find her approach to the break-up “insufferable”.  One source said: “‘Conscious uncoupling’ has become a joke among Gwyneth’s friends. All she’s doing is bragging about how peaceful her divorce is and how she and Chris planned it so perfectly that it is hardly disrupting their lives.”

We hope, for everyone’s sake, that Gwyneth’s right, but we suspect that Chris’ comments may be the first of many revelations that will spoil the faultless image.
