BIRKENSTOCK’s journey from orthopedic staple to one of fashion’s most sought-after collaborators began in 2019, when Valentino’s red leather Arizona sandals embarked on the brand’s first true high-fashion interpretation of a classic silhouette. Rick Owens followed with an elongated strap tail on Birkenstock’s famous Arizonas and a luxe all-black tone on the Rotterdam sandals. Phoebe, Philo, and Celine lined the molded cork sandals in mink, proving that even a humble silhouette could carry couture weight.

Jil Sander’s 2021 collaboration reworked the Arizona, Milano, and Berlin sandals with a wider, rounded profile, satin nickel buckles, and raw-edged calfskin straps, alongside an entirely new style, the Velan. A year later, Manolo Blahnik brought his signature theatricality to the brand, dressing the Arizona sandals and Boston clogs in fuchsia and sapphire velvet with embellished silver clasps that reflect his own history as the designer behind Carrie Bradshaw’s most coveted heels.

Collaboration with Dior elevated the luxury credentials for Birkenstock. The first drop, shown in Paris Fashion Week Men’s, reworked the Milano sandals in Dior grey felt with a co-branded footbed alongside the Tokio mule. Around the same period, Stussyt brought a streetwear and Americana sensibility to the brand’s roster.

BIRKENSTOCK X REPETTO

Now, BIRKENSTOCK turns the world of ballet; it’s the latest collaboration with French heritage house REPETTO. The collection reimagines three silhouettes: the Arizona sandals, fitted with exclusive oversized round buckles for a sculptural touch; the Scala, taking shape with a round toe, two delicate straps, and a graceful laced bow; and the Opéra sabot, adorned with long, fluid laces that wrap gently around the ankle like a dancer’s ribbon. All three styles come in European size 35 to 42, are offered in Repetto’s three signature shades—iconic pink, flame red, and profound black—and are unified by the house’s signature Vichy-check footbed lining, giving an effortless Parisian chic vibe.

BIRKENSTOCK’s foot health legacy traces back to 1774, while Repetto was founded in 1947 by Rose Repetto, who first crafted dance shoes for her son, dancer and choreographer Roland Petit, a lineage that later produced the Cendrillon flat for Brigitte Bardot and the Zizi for Serge Gainsbourg. Repetto is no stranger to this kind of creative dialogue either, having previously collaborated with Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Jacquemus, and Marine Serre.

Brought to life in Paris by BIRKINSTOCK’s 1774 special projects unit and produced in the brand’s German workshops, the collection is considered a continuation of both houses’ philosophies that comfort is a craft that is a kind of quiet artistry.
