As the awards season well and truly comes to an end for 2014, what better way to see it out than with the MTV Movie Awards – a lighthearted, teen-friendly, celebrity-laden red carpet event in Hollywood. This year’s event had its share of OMG-moments, but they were definitely more of the cute and heartwarming kind than the wardrobe malfunction kind (although Zac Efron did have a little trouble with his shirt). Here is EW’s pick of what you need to know…
Hollywood’s favourite comedic ginger Conan O’Brien hosted the show and opened with an impressive cameo clip featuring 50 celebrities (Conan being number 50) in under five minutes. The clip which was filmed over three weeks, and had to accommodate O’Brien’s busy schedule, featured Ice Cube, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Lupita Nyong’o, Taylor Swift and Martin Scorsese just to name a few.
The biggest winner of the night was the teen dystopian movie genre – with Hunger Games: Catching Fire taking Movie Of The Year, and it’s lead actor and actress (Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence) taking Best Male Performance and Best Female Performance respectively. Shailene Woodley’s Divergent character Tris Prior was named as Favourite Character.
The biggest tear-jerking moment was Jordana Brewster’s tribute to her longtime, late co-star Paul Walker. She said of Walker: “He was humble. He thought about others.” referencing his philanthropic endeavors, seh added: “He never asked for credit or glory. He was just a really good guy.” Her tribute was accompanied by a touching montage of his greatest moments on and off screen and was narrated by his The Fast And The Furious co-star Vin Diesel.
Teen heartthrob Zac Efron won the coveted Best Shirtless Performance and while in the midst of giving his heartfelt acceptance speech the rebellious Rita Ora blindsided him from the wings, ripping off his shirt as she ran passed. Twitter exploded with tweets of approval.
The most anticipated and ultimately best performance of the night was from heavy-hitters Rihanna and Eminem. They performed the hit Monster wearing matching bomber jackets. It was their first live performance together in several years, but it is just a hint at what fans can expect in their upcoming summer The Monster Tour. Rihanna who had arrived on the red carpet wearing a silken robe carried through the theme by wearing a sleep mask with with word FEAR on it. This item is from the latest VFiles collection that was seen at New York Fashion Week.
But as far as we are concerned the greatest moment of the show was when Grumpy Cat one-upped Jared Leto and Johnny Depp. All three wore variations of Pharrell William’s Grammy hat – Leto in a tall, woven straw hat, Depp in a hole punctured, worse-for-wear one, and Grumpy Cat in a chic melton felt version. Bravo Grumpy Cat!
