Talking to us in detail about the world-class The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert resort, Dempsey shares insights on what the property aims to offer to its guest, his personal advice on anyone following his footsteps, what lies ahead for the space, and beyond.

Tell us about your educational background and what was your favorite subject?

I graduated from Shannon College of Hotel Management in Ireland in 2005, a school renowned for producing hospitality leaders with a strong operational foundation and global perspective. My favorite subject was Hotel Operations, it was the heartbeat of everything we were learning. I was fascinated by how each department interconnects to create seamless guest experiences. That early exposure to the intricacies of service delivery and team dynamics shaped my leadership style today.

What was your first job?

My first role was with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as a Manager in Training. It was a ski resort, and the environment was both challenging and exhilarating. I quickly progressed to Head of Department in Front Office, which gave me hands-on experience in guest relations, team management, and the rhythm of luxury hospitality. That role taught me the importance of precision, empathy, and consistency values I still carry.

What brought you to Dubai?

Dubai represented a convergence of ambition and opportunity. I had a clear goal: to become a General Manager of a luxury hotel and gain international experience. Joining The Ritz-Carlton Dubai as Hotel Manager was a pivotal moment. The city’s dynamic hospitality scene, its appetite for innovation, and the diversity of talent made it the perfect place to grow professionally and personally.

What inspired you to enter the hospitality industry?

Hospitality is about people; it’s about creating moments that stay with guests long after they leave. I was drawn to the industry because it blends creativity, culture, and leadership. From a young age, I was intrigued by the idea of crafting experiences, and as I progressed, I realized how powerful storytelling and service could be in shaping a brand and a team. I was always into showbusiness and there is nothing more “showbusinessy” than the hotel business!

Talk us through the concept of The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah.

The resort is a celebration of desert elegance and curated luxury. We’ve reimagined the guest journey to reflect the natural beauty of the Al Wadi Desert while delivering world-class experiences. It’s not just about accommodation, it’s about immersion. Whether it’s stargazing in the dunes, dining at Farmhouse by Syrco, or engaging with local heritage, every touchpoint is intentional and authentic.

What are the key elements of your role?

My role is a balance of strategic leadership and emotional intelligence. I oversee commercial performance, guest satisfaction, and team development. But more importantly, I’m a storyteller and a culture builder. I embed The Ritz-Carlton Gold Standards into every aspect of the operation, ensuring that our service is not only luxurious but also deeply personal.

Talk us through your daily routine.

I start each day with a walk through the property, it’s my way of staying connected with the team and the guest experience. Mornings are focused on performance reviews, strategy sessions, and operational planning. Afternoons are dedicated to mentoring, partner engagement, and ensuring our standards are upheld. I make time to listen, to coach, and to celebrate wins—big or small.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow the same footsteps?

Be relentlessly curious and genuinely humble. Every role, every challenge, is a learning opportunity. Build relationships, invest in your team, and never lose sight of the guest. Luxury hospitality is about storytelling—learn to tell yours with authenticity, and let your leadership be defined by empathy and excellence. Never doubt yourself, trust others and value relationships.

Tell us more about The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah and what it has to offer to its guests.

It’s a destination that transcends expectations. From private villas nestled in the desert to curated wellness journeys and culinary innovation, the resort offers a tapestry of experiences. Our collaboration with Chef Syrco Bakker at Farmhouse is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and haute cuisine. Guests come for the luxury, but they leave with memories rooted in culture and connection.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

“Lead with empathy but never lose sight of excellence.” That advice has guided me through transitions, challenges, and growth. It reminds me that leadership is not just about results, it’s about people, purpose, and presence.

And what is the worst?

“Don’t take it personally.” In hospitality, everything is personal. Every detail, every interaction, every decision impacts someone’s experience. While it’s important to maintain perspective, caring deeply is what sets great leaders apart.

What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?

Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic was a defining moment. Keeping the hotel open, protecting our associates, and pivoting strategy in real time required resilience, adaptability, and unity. It tested every facet of leadership, from financial acumen to emotional strength.

What lies ahead for the brand?

The future is about deepening our connection with guests through elevated experiences, sustainability, and innovation. We’re focused on crafting moments that are not only luxurious but also meaningful. The Ritz-Carlton will continue to lead with purpose, redefining what modern luxury looks and feels like.
