Fashion designer, and girlfriend to Mick Jagger, L’Wren Scott was found dead yesterday in her New York flat in a suspected suicide.
The 49 year old, who has been dating the Rolling Stone legend since 2001, was found in her Manhattan apartment by her assistant. While there was no suspicion of foul play, medical examiners have yet to release a formal report.
A source close to Mick said: “He is completely shocked and devastated by the news.” The story of her death emerged just hours after Mick tweeted a picture of himself on a beach in Australia, during his band’s first tour in the country in eight years.
While the brunette beauty was not believed to have suffered from depression, sources believe she was struggling with a massive debt. She is said to have owed creditors US$6 million.
In macabre twist, both L’Wren’s Facebook and Twitter profiles continued to be updated after she was found hanging from a scarf tied to a door knob, leading many to believe news of her death as a hoax. The situation was described as “beyond sad” as the pre-written posts were scheduled to automatically publish on her account.
L’Wren became one if New York’s most famous designers over the last decade with her form-fitting designs that catered to the powerful and sleek. Most recently she had collaborated with Banana Republic with a capsule collection. The 6ft 3ins tall designer was a firm favourite among Hollywood A-listers including Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams and Penelope Cruz. A close friend of Nicole’s said she was “heartbroken and in shock right now and unable to say anything.”
“L’Wren was a total perfectionist, someone who absolutely embodied everything he marvellous clothes stood for: strength of character combined with a confident and powerful style,” said Anna Wintour.
Sadly, L’Wren is not the first fashion designer to take their own life. In 2010, Alexander McQueen, who suffered from depression died at the age of 40, while Isabella Bow died in 2007 at the age of 48.
