India Couture Week is a celebration of the country’s rich craft, heritage, textiles and skills. But, it is also the platform where the bridal trends of the season are forged.
This time around was not different — veteran Indian designers showcased their exquisite line of decadent couture at the 2023 edition of ICW in the Capital.
While all of these iconic designers have now established their signature styles and only experimented within those realms, there was a silhouette that was highlighted as the common denominator —
the mermaid skirt. From Kiara Alia Advani at Falguni Shane Peacock to Sobhita Dhulipala at Rohit Khanna & Rahul Gandhi, all of the Bollywood girls were styled in the scintillating combination of a sensuous skirt and a dainty bralette.
Mermaid skirts have always been popular in the Indian fashion scenario, especially the traditional treatment given to them for special occasions and weddings. Their fitted silhouette flaring out at the bottom adds elegance and style to traditional outfits, creating a fusion of modern and traditional aesthetics.

Many designers in the past have incorporated mermaid skirts into lehengas, sarees, and gowns, offering a unique and contemporary touch to them. For this particular season, the creative visionaries went bold yet minimal with their approach. While the skirts were decked with rich embroidery and surface embellishment, the cut and the style were tailored for the modern Indian bride.
Special mention to Rimzim Dadu, who made her couture debut and showcased an array of lehengas and saris in her trademark hardware material. Think lehengas but made out of fluid and bendable metal. Showstopped Ananya Panday punctuated her show in a molted gold bralette and mermaid skirt, detailed with a leafy woven texture in the bottom silhouette.
