Some would associate a pub with a place where feet get stuck to the floor, men sport bellies so large they protrude beneath their slogan T-shirts, and where there’s a distinct aroma of stale hops. So when The Gramercy was set to open in DIFC, it was met with apprehension: would the arrival of a sports-bar-cum-gastropub ruin the area’s hip and fashionable reputation? Well, two years since its opening, it’s fast become a hub for trendy socialites, sports enthusiasts, food connoisseurs and jazz lovers (saxophonists and jazz singers perform most nights of the week) alike.
DECOR
Polished wooden floors, leather cushioned booths, crystal chandeliers and a mishmash of sports memorabilia. When it comes to appearance The Gramercy has quite a split personality, but in doing sobecause of this it attracts a great and interesting mix of clientele – it tries to offer something for all. The open -space floor plan makes it ideal for group gatherings; however, it also means there is no escaping the cigarette smoke and cold air con.
AMBIENCE
Large flat-screen TVs showcasing the latest games ensure it’s a roaring hotspot for sports lovers. However, with live Rat-Pack-style entertainment, couples also find it an ideal laidback dating spot. Overall, the atmosphere is buzzing but not boisterous – just the right level of action to keep you in high spirits.
WHY BOTHER?
A vast drinks menu ranging from James-Bond-style cocktails to a spectacular array of hop varieties and grape choices guarantees you’re kept happy whatever the hour. While the pub may be styled on a pseudo-1950s-esque pub, the grub is more upscale fine-dining quality. The classics such as fish and chips, pie and mash and cheeseburgers may be on the menu, but they also appear next to oysters, foie gras and a fresh catch of the day – as we said, this isn’t your typical pub.
GO FOR
Great upbeat atmosphere, live entertainment, post-work drinks and group catch-ups. Ladies’ night runs every Tuesday (from 7pm to 11pm). Ladies enjoy four free cocktails and a ladies’ night menu with dishes costing just Dhs40 each.
