After being the first woman to hold the position as Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the United States, HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud has been nominated for another key international role.
The royal has been put forward to represent the Kingdom at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As one of three women nominated, this is another opportunity for her to encourage more female athletes.
“Great progress has been made around the world in promoting greater access to sport for women and girls, and ensuring their equal participation in sports,” she wrote on Twitter. “I remain committed to these principles, and look forward to building on the IOC’s efforts in this respect.”
With many strings to her bow, Princess Reema is the president of the Mass Participation Federation, vice president of Women’s Affairs at the Saudi General Sports Authority, and chair of the Saudi Arabia Special Olympics.
The five candidates, including two men, are waiting to be approved by IOC Executive Board on July 17.
“By proposing three female candidates, the IOC demonstrates again its commitment to promoting gender equality within its leadership by implementing the governance-related recommendation of the Gender Equality Review Project, which set the target of having 30 per cent of decision-making positions for women by 2020,” the statement from the IOC Executive Board said.
