Who says Dubai has no history?
In a city full of photogenic spots, Dubai Creek is one of our favourites. When you want a break from the glitz of the modern side of the city, there’s nothing better than heading down to the old town for an abra ride and a browse of the souks.
It’s part of what makes our city unique, and now, Dubai Creek might be headed for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The creek is on a shortlist of 30 set to be considered by this year’s committee, the Dubai Media Office says.

Should it be selected, the creek will sit alongside major sites like the Vatican City, the Great Barrier Reef, the Taj Mahal and Machu Picchu. We’d call that pretty good company.
The UNESCO panel are sitting in Bahrain right now, and we’re hoping that being in the area will endear them to the Dubai Creek.
It would be a second world heritage site for the UAE. Back in 2011, the cultural sites of Al Ain were added to the list.
“The property provides important testimony to the transition of cultures in the region from hunting and gathering to sedentarisation,” says the UNESCO commentary on the site.
Right now, there are 1,037 places on the world heritage list. We’re thinking the Dubai Creek should make that 1,038…
