The international fashion fest is heading to Dubai this weekend…
We watched with interest as Modest Fashion Week took over in London and Istanbul, and now, it’s coming here to the UAE. Taking place at Burj Park in Downtown Dubai on Friday and Saturday (so maybe it’s more of a weekend) the event is a must for fashionistas who prefer to cover up.
The even better news? Two of our favourite hjiabi models, Halima Aden and Mariah Idrissi (hi there, September cover girl) will be on hand.
Here’s what to get excited about this weekend.

The big names
Aden and Idrissi are attending, like we said, but they’re not the only notables making it to the UAE for the shows. Turkish model Tülin Şahin has already touched down in Dubai, as you can see here:
Mega popular YouTuber Dina Tokio will be attending, as well as Hisham El Hajj, Sara Elhani, Salah Kurdi, and Bollywood actress Gauahar Khan, among others. Keen to meet them? MFW is running a meet and greet on the Saturday evening.
The shows
Of course, you’ll also catch a glimpse of the women above at the shows themselves. You can check out a detailed schedule here, on the site, but our picks are local favourite Miella, Japanese label Huw Roman, luxe minimalist brand Aere, from Malaysia, and Turkish brand Annah Hariri.
Friday afternoon’s opening show is also one to make sure you attend – put together by Modanisa, it will include designs from Rasit Bagsibagli, Muslima Wear, and Selma Sari.
The talks
Interested in how modest fashion is moving into the mainstream, the business of fashion, and Dubai’s place in the industry? You’ll want to check out the weekend’s talks. Friday sees a discussion on the evolution of the abaya with local fashion heavyweight HE Sheikha Hend Faisal Al Qassemi.
The same evening, a panel including Aden and Tokio will talk about why representation of modest fashion matters. Saturday sees discussions on the secret lives of bloggers (we’re interested) and how to fuse activism and fashion.
The details
Modest Fashion Week runs from 3-10.30pm Friday December 8 and 11.30am-10.30pm Saturday December 9. It’s free to attend, but you do need to register on the site. All shows and talks will be held at Burj Park, Downtown Dubai.
See you in the front row.
