There is no denying that Christmas is upon us. One common tradition to get in the festive spirit is a visit to Christmas Markets.

The concept of the Christmas market was founded in Munich, Germany, Weihnachtsmarkt began in around 1310. However, over 700 years later, they have become a global phenomenon and a key part of festive celebrations for many.

With that, here’s some of the best Christmas markets across the world, that can be enjoyed year after year.

Germany – Weihnachtsmarkt Am Kölner Dom

Germany is at the top of the list considering the markets originated here, the Weihnachtsmarkt Am Kölner Dom is the top choice but there are an array of other wonderful markets across Germany; Dresden, Munich and Berlin to name a few. The market in Cologne is arguably the most popular partially due to the incredible backdrop of the cathedral. Grab a mug of gluhwein under the fairy lights, enjoy the festivities and have a ride on the carousel. There is lots to see and buy from regional food, wood carvings, tree decorations and handmade gifts that are all sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Singapore – Christmas Wonderland

Singapore isn’t typically a place you would consider for a Christmas market yet the annual Christmas Wonderland that began in 2014 has changed that. Situated at the iconic Gardens by the Bay, the array of luminarie sculptures light up the markets and provide a magical backdrop. The sculptures alone make the market worth a visit but Santa’s workshop, a snow globe, elves and a parade ensure you will leave with the markets full of Christmas spirit.

Vienna – Magic of Advent

Vienna in December embodies Christmas as a whole, the entire city celebrates and gives a festive cheer. Elegant architecture, glittering lights, pine trees, snow, Vienna is the ultimate Winter Wonderland. There are an array of Christmas markets yet the main is set in front of Schönbrunn Palace creating a truly magical setting. Trying the countries traditional Christmas punch, melange coffee and gingerbread are a must. The market has a large Christmas tree, live music, workshops for children, nativity sets and a range of stalls for local treats. Austria does Christmas perfectly.

France – Place de l’Ancienne Douane

Colmar is home to the best Christmas market in France. A beyond quaint destination that has that ‘oldy-world’ feel. The area is known for its culture, gastronomy, and unique views yet Christmas is when the place truly comes to life. Lit by festive illuminations, a central Christmas tree, a labyrinth of winding cobbled streets, decorations upon decorations, and stalls that offer local delicacies and handcrafted gifts. Colmar is simply enchanting over the Christmas period.

Russia – GUM Fair

Russia isn’t somewhere you originally think of when it comes to Christmas despite it being the perfect setting; cold and snowy whilst all wrapped up and illuminated by city lights. At Christmas the Red Square is transformed into a Christmas market, the Kremlin is in the background and the streets are abundant with Christmas decorations and lights. An ice-skating-rink, huge Christmas tree that is specially selected to be ‘beautiful’ and an array of stalls selling handmade gifts. Treat yourself to local snacks, decorations, or Russian Matryoshka Dolls and Khokhloma painted toys.
