While most women in the UAE cite that they feel 100 per cent safe in the region, a recent event has challenged those views.
Following the shocking murder of a Filipina domestic worker, women have been urged to learn self defence.
Gabriela, a women’s rights group, is encouraging women to learn the skills necessary to protect themselves should they ever be in danger.
Kristie Mae Templa Gonzales, secretary-general of Gabriela, an international group advocating women’s rights, told Khaleej Times: “Women are vulnerable to various forms of harassments and sometimes there is no one to protect you other than yourself.”
The advice to learn the self defence also comes after recent reports revealed that 90 per cent of eve-teasing crimes reported in the emirate last year were related to indecent assault.
Eve-teasing is a form of sexual harassment of women in public places, the making of unwanted sexual remarks or advances by a man to a woman in a public place.
Gonzales added: “Aside from memorising the police emergency hotlines, the most important thing is to be alert and know how to protect yourself.”
