Washington DC is not a city known for its style. For 364 days of the year the politician’s playground is a sea of grey suits and black lace ups. But for one night of the year DC transforms itself into the fashion capital of America with faces from the world of politics and showbiz donning their best threads to celebrate at White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Last night US president Barack Obama invited Hollywood’s most stylish for an evening of fun and glamour with best dressed guests including Lupita Nyong’o, Sofia Vergara, Freida Pinto and Jessica Simpson. The star to claim the best dressed crown was First Lady and perpetual style icon Michelle Obama.
Michelle, known for her stellar wardrobe, chose a light grey Marchesa gown with an intricate beaded bodice and asymmetric neckline, subtly accessorised with silver drop earrings and modest low heels.
Our second favourite style-setter was Sofia Vergara. The Colombian-born star showed off her famous curves in a strapless gold and white Romona Keveza gown paired with Grecian style jewels and finished with loose glossy waves.
Girl-of-the-moment Lupita Nyong’o continued her ascent into styledom wearing a strapless, peplum-detail dress with a matching clutch bag from Oscar de la Renta’s A/W14 collection. It was great to see Lupita trying her hand at monochrome, but, of course, she couldn’t resist an element of fun with a slick of hot pink lippy.
Actress Freida Pinto stunned in a gloriously girly pink gown from NYC designer Thakoon. She kept her hair in a classic low-bun with a centre part but bared a glimpse of her toned midriff with a daring cut-out detail.
Last, but at not means least, was all-American Jessica Simpson who flaunted her newly trim waist in a classically elegant Carolina Herrera floral gown.
