The move hopes to increase the number of Muslim female recruits
A UK police force has unveiled a new uniform in a bid to recruit more Muslim women officers.
West Yorkshire police’s loose-fitting uniform is designed so it doesn’t “show the female form”.

This is the first of its kind in the UK that a less revealing uniform has been adopted in a public-facing role.
“For the last month, we have been trialing a new uniform for women. The tunic is a looser and longer fit and has full sleeves. This has been well-received from officers in the force and we have now made further supplies of this uniform for other officers to try it if they wish,” Assistant Chief Constable Angela Williams said.
She added that she hopes that it’ll encourage those from under-represented communities to consider a career with the police force. While more women and those that identify as disabled have signed up recently, there has been less success from black and ethnic minority communities (BAME).
“We are open to suggestions from all communities on how our uniform can be styled to better suit their needs,” she added.
In 2016, Police Scotland made the hijab an optional part of its uniform to encourage more Muslim women recruits, 10 years after the Metropolitan Police in London did so.
West Midlands and Leicestershire’s chief constables also said they’d consider cops to wear burqas and niqabs too.
Here’s to more diversity in the workforce!
